No New Coal

The Greens NSW 'No New Coal' position seeks to halt the runaway expansion of the coal industry. Instead, we seek the growth of new jobs in clean green energy industries to make the NSW economy more competitive in the emerging low carbon world economy.

It is insane that in the 21st century era of climate change the NSW Government is still heavily investing in the expansion of the coal industry:

  • approving record numbers of new coal mines across NSW
  • opening up prime agricultural lands to new coal exploration by multinational mining companies
  • approving a third coal loader at Newcastle Port
  • building hundreds of kilometres of new rail lines and rail infrastructure for coal mines
  • financing speculative "clean coal" carbon capture and storage pilot projects,
  • proposing new coal fired power stations, and
  • the burgeoning expansion of existing mines following the recent rise in the price of coal.

You don't need a crystal ball to see what the future holds if the major parties' love affair with the coal industry is not stopped. Lured by the coal industry heavies and campaign donations from the fossil fuel industries, they have comprehensively rejected the serious changes to our economy and to our lifestyles that are required to avert disaster.

The Greens are showing leadership by promoting alternatives to coal, and insisting that both industry and government change their ways to secure a future for this planet.

Greens NSW No New Coal map

One look at the Greens No New Coal mine map tells you the expansion of coalmines in NSW is out of control!

RED marks are existing coalmines.
BLUE marks are proposed coalmines.
YELLOW pins are disused or derelict mines.

For years The Greens, environment groups and coal affected communities have called on the NSW Government to place a moratorium on new coal mines until the cumulative impact of coal expansion is properly assessed.
